Birmingham
Are you an experienced Veterinary Surgeon looking to take the next step into clinical leadership?
Would you like to remain predominantly clinical while having genuine scope to shape and develop a growing practice?
Looking for a role where your work can directly contribute to the welfare of animals in need?
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Lead Veterinary Surgeon to join an independent, charity-owned veterinary practice in Birmingham.
This is a unique opportunity to combine hands-on first-opinion veterinary work with clinical leadership, within a practice where the work you do has a purpose beyond the individual patient in front of you.
The practice works closely with an established animal welfare organisation, providing veterinary care to animals within its rehoming centres alongside delivering a high-quality first-opinion service to private clients and their pets.
All profits generated by the practice are reinvested into supporting the charity's wider work, meaning your clinical expertise can directly contribute to improving the welfare of animals in need.
The Practice
This independent, charity-owned practice provides first-opinion veterinary care to both private clients and animals within the organisation's rehoming centres.
The combination of general practice and shelter medicine creates a varied caseload, with the team caring for animals with a wide range of routine, medical, surgical and emergency needs.
The purpose-built practice is well equipped, with facilities including:
- Digital radiography
- Ultrasound
- Dedicated dental room
- Digital dental radiography
- In-house laboratory
- Separate dog and cat wards
- Dedicated surgical facilities
The practice continues to grow alongside the wider organisation, with increasing clinical demand and scope for the successful Clinical Lead to play an important part in its continued development.
The Role
This is a genuinely varied first-opinion Veterinary Surgeon position, with approximately 75% of your working time remaining clinically focused.
You'll have the opportunity to manage your own caseload, undertake consultations and surgery, and use your clinical experience across a broad range of cases.
The caseload includes:
- First-opinion consultations
- Routine spays and castrates
- Shelter medicine
- Emergency and critical care
- Orthopaedic cases
- Diagnostic imaging
- A broad range of general practice procedures
An interest or experience in orthopaedics would be particularly advantageous, with the practice keen to make full use of its existing equipment.
Alongside your clinical responsibilities, you'll have genuine scope to help shape the continued development of the practice.
You will work closely with the Practice Manager and wider team on areas including:
- Supporting and developing the clinical team
- Clinical standards and processes
- Recruitment and team development
- Practice development
- Budgets and financial discussions
- Helping shape the future direction of the service
The balance between clinical and leadership responsibilities can be discussed with the successful candidate, with the expectation that around 75% of the role will remain clinically focused.
The Team & Culture
You'll be joining a dedicated clinical team consisting of three Veterinary Surgeons and three RVNs.
The veterinary team works across consultations, operations and shelter medicine, while the nursing team supports theatre, preparation and consulting.
The practice works closely with the wider animal welfare organisation, creating a collaborative environment where veterinary care and animal welfare go hand in hand.
The successful candidate will need to be comfortable working independently and sole charge when required, while also being someone who enjoys supporting colleagues and contributing positively to the wider team.
