There is a well recorded rise in mental health issues across the whole of the US – including thought disorders, and affective disorders – which has resulted in an estimated 21% of all US adults experiencing a mental illness annually, according to Mental Health America (MHA). This translates to 55 million people across the whole of the US.
A report generated from the Kaiser Family Foundation and CNN survey – referenced in the American Psychological Association – states that one third of respondents could not access the mental health services they needed, demonstrating the high demand for provider support.
As a result, Behavioral Health providers are responding to rising demand for services through various strategies, with technology playing a central role in their adaptations. Providers are increasingly utilizing telehealth and digital platforms to expand access and bridge care gaps. Enhanced telehealth capabilities allow for real-time consultations, remote monitoring, and even the integration of virtual reality, improving accessibility and patient engagement while easing burdens on stretched workforces. The introduction of technology to address demand opens-up staffing experts from across the whole of the US, whereas in previous response many providers were restricted to regional availability.
To enhance care quality, there is also a push toward integrated and value-based care models, which emphasize preventive measures and coordination among multiple care providers, to ensure receivers of care are getting specialized training programmes based on specific complex needs. As technology continues to evolve, particularly in field of AI, the Behavioral Health sector can expect to see the adoption of personalized care, and more efficient service delivery which in turn will benefit patients, and providers. It will remain to be seen whether policy and regulatory changes will also develop as technology is integrated within care plans for everyday use.
