Our client is expanding its clinical team and launching an exciting Primary Care Transition Programme for experienced Nurse or Paramedic Practitioners.
This is a unique 12-month structured development opportunity designed to support primary care clinicians to transition into autonomous Urgent Care Practitioner roles within a busy, modern UTC environment.
- About the Service
Friendly, GP-led urgent care centre located in the heart of Portsmouth.
• 7-day service (08:00–20:00)
• Approximately 6,000 patients seen per month
• Modern facilities and supportive multidisciplinary team
The unit manages a broad range of minor illness and minor injury presentations and is backed by strong governance, supervision and education frameworks.
The Opportunity
This programme is designed for experienced primary care Nurse or Paramedic Practitioners who are motivated to expand their urgent care skillset.
You will:
• Work 30 hours per week delivering minor illness care within the UTC
• Spend 7.5 hours per week developing minor injury competencies
• Complete a structured competency portfolio
• Receive supervision from GPs, a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Reporting Radiographers and Advanced Practitioners
• Gain experience in X-ray interpretation, procedural skills and autonomous urgent care practice
The successful candidate will be expected to achieve all core competencies within 12 months and will then transition into a fully autonomous Urgent Care Practitioner role.

What You’ll Be Doing
• Autonomous assessment, investigation and diagnosis of minor illness (with minor injury competencies developed during programme)
• Requesting and interpreting investigations including X-ray, ECG, urinalysis and point-of-care blood tests
• Independent prescribing within scope of practice
• Identifying and escalating medical and trauma emergencies appropriately
• Supporting peak demand and initial assessment processes
• Ensuring appropriate patient follow-up and referrals
• Providing mentorship and support to trainee practitioners and healthcare support workers
• Contributing to clinical governance, supervision and service improvement
What We’re Looking For
Essential
• Registered Nurse (NMC) or Paramedic (HCPC)
• Minimum 5 years post-registration experience
• Background in primary care and/or urgent care
• Independent Non-Medical Prescriber
• Able to work autonomously and manage clinical risk
• Strong critical reasoning and decision-making skills
• Commitment to professional development
• Evidence of CPD
Desirable
• Postgraduate qualification in advanced practice
• Experience with PGDs
• Experience of clinical supervision or mentorship
• X-ray interpretation, suturing or plastering experience
• Life support qualifications (ILS/ALS)
• Safeguarding Level 3
