Deputy Ward Manager – Surgical Ward - Leading Private Hospital

£45,000-£50,000 plus Private Medical Insurance, CPD, Gym Membership & More

Full-Time, Permanent, 37.5 Hours per Week

Oxford, Oxfordshire

Overview

Compass Associates are proud to be working with an award-winning healthcare organisation, who are currently recruiting for a dedicated Deputy Ward Manager to join their high-performing mixed Surgical Ward located in Oxford. This leading hospital offers a full range of surgeries including Orthopaedics, Cosmetics, Cardiac, Oncology, Gynaecology and Urology.

This is more than a deputy role. It’s an opportunity to step into a visible, high-impact leadership position within a flagship hospital where new initiatives, equipment and innovations are often piloted first.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Ward Manager in day-to-day operational leadership
  • Deputise fully in their absence
  • Coordinate staffing across two floor
  • Optimise permanent, bank and agency staffing levels
  • Lead, motivate and develop a large multidisciplinary team
  • Ensure safe, efficient, patient-centred care across a complex surgical environment
  • Contribute to workforce optimisation initiatives shaping the future model of care

This is a ward that works hard. It’s busy, dynamic, and requires a leader who can see the bigger picture while remaining clinically grounded.

Requirements

  • NMC registered Nurse
  • Right to work in the UK
  • Senior Staff Nurse / Sister-level experience (Band 6/7 equivalent) at a minimum
  • Proven team leadership experiences
  • Ability to manage complexity across multiple specialties and locations
  • Strong surgical ward background
  • Confidence to step up and lead from day one
  • Experience as a Deputy Ward Manager or Clinical Leader will be advantageous

You do not need decades of management experience. Strong senior nurses ready to step into leadership are encouraged to apply.

Salary & Benefits

In return, there is a generous salary on offer up to £50,000 on offer dependent on experience, which could be negotiated for the right candidate. As well as having a competitive salary, they have a number of exceptional benefits including:

  • Excellent work-life balance
  • Private Medical Insurance
  • Opportunity to condense your hours
  • Life assurance
  • Free gym membership with discounts for family members
  • Free access to GPs
  • Wellbeing hub
  • Extensive learning and development opportunities with over 200 courses available
  • Wellness days
  • Season ticket loans
  • Health MOTs and more!

The Ward Manager is actively advocating for reinstating a second Deputy Ward Manager position. A successful appointment here could support restoring the two-deputy leadership structure — creating future progression opportunities.

If you’re a strong senior nurse ready to lead at scale — or an experienced Deputy Ward Manager seeking a high-impact environment — this is your opportunity to shape care within one of the UK’s most respected healthcare charities.
